This year they will finalize key terms, utilize Paratext translation software for computer checks, verify the manuscript with church leaders, and complete a final read-though of the entire text. Ask God to help them find any errors in their work. Pray for strength, good health, and clarity of mind for the team members. Pray that the Jamamadí would keep their focus on the Lord throughout this process despite some disruptions and misunderstandings within the community.

KAIWÁ; Brazil; 33,000. The first Kaiwá New Testament was completed in 1986, and then reprinted in 2006. The preparation for a limited printing of a “verification version,” containing both the New Testament and the recently drafted Old Testament, is nearly complete. It took longer than expected to put this version together. Pray for widespread involvement of the Kaiwá community in providing input into the New Testament revision and the Old Testament translation.

They must spend their time presenting the project to churches and individuals in order to raise more money. Pray that God will raise up the necessary funds to help this New Testament cross the finish line. Meanwhile, the Jarawara churches are using a drafted version of the New Testament. Ask the Holy Spirit to apply His Word to their hearts so that they will be eager to use the finished book. Pray that God would turn frustrating delays into something good.

Pray for them as they continue to attend Bible school and learn more English in the Philippines in preparation for coming to Papua New Guinea to serve with BTA.

Pray for the team to have the stamina to finish the translation and checking in the next two years, and then printing in 2014. In the meantime, lift up the Culina Christians. Pray that the Holy Spirit enables them to break away from their sin.

KAIWÁ; Brazil; 33,000. The first Kaiwá New Testament was completed in 1986 and then reprinted in 2006. The Old Testament was recently finished, and the whole Bible was published in an experimental version in time to dedicate it early in 2011. Pray for good relationships and insights for a revision team that will focus primarily on the New Testament so that a final version may soon be published. Pray also for one of the translators who is doing her MA studies in 2012 and for improved health for another translator who had surgery for cancer last year.

JARAWARA ; Brazil; 180. Praise the Lord that the New Testament was completely drafted in July 2010! There is still a lot of work to do, but it is a great milestone. However, because of financial reasons, the team won’t be able to meet their original goal for New Testament distribution in 2013. Please pray as the translators work to raise support. Praise God that in the meantime, churches will at least have a drafted version of the New Testament.

In answer to prayer, the language team, now at retirement age and physically limited, was miraculously able to get visas for two indigenous speakers to live with them in Texas for a few months. As a result, they were able to finish the translation of the New Testament earlier than hoped and now are working on computerized manuscript checks.

In September, participants including 128 indigenous representatives of 59 distinct ethnic groups, the majority from Brazil, and 80-100 national and expatriate missionaries attended a Scripture Use Forum sponsored by three partner organizations. Indigenous leaders led morning devotions followed by presentations, workshops, and evening services with their music and celebrations. A participant commented that he had never imagined such a large meeting which would bring many different ethnic groups together just to talk about God’s Word and its application to their lives. A simultaneous event aimed at evangelical students occurred at a nearby university - UniEVANGELICA. Pray that the seeds sown will bear much fruit.

Women gathering to study the Bible - Brazil

Brazil: Praise God for 80 women from 19 language groups who made it to the first gathering of indigenous Christian women. Bible studies on the theme “The truth will set you free” showed them how to overcome the lies and abuse that many women suffer, and to live holy lives, influencing their families and communities. It was so profitable, they plan to meet at least twice more this year.

Brazil: The first meeting of the Indigenous Evangelical Women’s Association took place in March. The primary objective was to help women to use the vernacular Scriptures to resolve issues they face as daughters of God, citizens, and members of the community and of the family. Brazilian churches were challenged to adopt a participant, paying her bus fare and meals. Pray for more such opportunities to promote the use of the Scriptures.

Indigenous missionaries reaching out in Brazil

Praise God that Brazilian and indigenous missionaries are increasingly reaching out to indigenous communities. Both are working in 8 communities, and indigenous missionaries are working in 6 others. However, in most areas there is no Christian witness, not even by visiting evangelists. Bible translation is still needed in at least 10 language groups.

Brazilian missionaries were expelled from another Kaiwa village. But in a third village near the Paraguayan border, 23 young Kaiwa men were delivered from alcohol addiction and baptised.”

In December, 2009 the Brazilian Bible translation organization ALEM elected their new executive secretary, Jose Carlos. The previous executive secretary and family will resume their work with a people group. Pray for them as they return to this assignment. Pray too for Jose Carlos and family. During this time of transition, they have experienced several near accidents and one accident involving their car. Ask the Lord to protect them and bring these trials to a close. Then they can turn their attention fully to leadership of ALEM.
